Yes. Our forefathers were great men. They were geniuses. But they were men..imperfect like all of us. They were also products of their times. They should not be judged by what was norm for their times imo.
You don’t think field hands were raped?
Not what I said. Read it again. Some were raped. Some may have seen it as an opportunity to get out of having to work in the fields in the hot sun.
Even today, there are some girls who, given a choice between working a working-class job, or living with a well-off guy who they have no feelings for, choose the latter.
Actually mulattoes were rare before 1860. Census records prove it. It is one of those things everybody knows but is not true.
Like that sugar babie in utah?
Rate? That is because the first time mulatto appeared on the census record was 1850. Then 1860?
By appeared meaning it was offered as a category on the census.
I have not studied the census but took a course taught by Dr. Wallace at Troy. He was also president of Phi Beta Kappa for Alabama.
His specialty was history of the old South. He had several original copies of the journals of plantation owners. I was given a partial copy of one who lived near Eufaula, Alabama.
Some of the preconceptions were true. He would sometimes whip one. He was also kind to them in many other ways. I recall a list he made of purchases made in Eufaula. Among them were a large number of toys for slave children. Also bought whiskey for them but they were not allowed to store it.
He subscribed to several newspapers including Northern ones. He was a devout Christian as were most of his slaves.
That course is where I learned of the actual very rare rate of miscegenation.
