They showed 2 or 3 other demonstrators joining him, kind of grabbing him and the group ran off to the opposite side to the street. They cut it it off before one could tell if the group escaped.

The group were security forces and they took him away - if you look closely you can see he is held by the arm and neck (when you are taken into custody in China, this is how you will be controlled). Also you can see another guy waving the tanks on - tank man was then arrested, tortured and beaten to death.

It did take place after the massacre in Beijing; the tanks were returning from the massacre, but there were other massacres in other cities who had risen up demanding freedom which continued for weeks I think.

BTW: Deng and his cabal are referred to in China as “conservatives”, while the students and citizens of Beijing are described as “liberals” - the conservatives, in this case, are conserving the Communist party and their individual power, while the others wanted freedom - a liberal idea in China.

Also the unofficial count of dead is not 10,000, but 10s of thousands with 60,000 wounded and maimed - these numbers only count the massacres in Beijing. There are no records from the dozens of other cities where many were shot dead.

Reviewing the documentaries, the tank man incident occurred after the main massacre. However many other massacres occurred in various other cities at the same time and following - they were all put down brutally ie people were shot.

That is an amazing image.

An even more amazing image is of the un-cropped photo. IIRC, it shows a very long line of tanks, extending beyond a street corner and out of sight.

I just re-read the time-line of Tiananmen Square for the first time since it happened. I had forgotten it went on for months!

I just looked again at the video of the Tank Man incident--again, first time since 1989. Wow. I'd forgotten he climbs up on the tank and talks to the driver, etc., tank tries to go around him.

At the end a few civilians (dressed like the other demonstrators) come up to Tank Man, talk to him, and hurry him away.

They were not “civilians,” they were security forces - every bit as much as the Mountain troops were government entities - they hurried him way to arrest, torture and beat him to death.
