This research is fine and all, but, the print/TV news outlets have been swaying votes via selective reporting for as long as I can remember. Are Google, et.al. really any different? Can regulations applied to internet keyword search algorithms, also be applied in equal measure to TV news ‘journalism’?? ...to print ‘journalism’?? And why waste time attacking an enemy stronghold head on, if there is a way to go around it??

This effort to form public opinion is well known, and has been exercised by the press since, well, since the press was formed. The notion of an "objective" press is a myth, one created and enforced by the people the myth serves.

Just saying, whatever power google has, the press has 10 to 100 times MORE power -- and it uses it.

Could someone please explain how they do this manipulation of votes so those of us that still look at a computer as a smart typewriter can play too.Or, at least have a glimpse of what is going on.

“...burying/not returning information contrary to what they want yuo to see...”

This is the key - the material omitted is often more important information that people should be aware of than the material allowed.

I hope there is something to be done about this.

Here’s a clip from our link. Pretty much sums up what is going on:
............................
From Breitbart:

By inserting negative search suggestions under the name of a candidate, search engines like Google can shift the opinions of undecided voters by up to 43.4 percent, according to new research by a team at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology and reported exclusively by Breitbart News.

The lead author of the study, Dr. Robert Epstein, has previously conducted research into what he calls the Search Engine Manipulation Effect (SEME). This research showed that the manipulation of results pages in search engines can shift the voting preferences of undecideds by anywhere between 20 and 80 percent, depending on the demographic.

His latest research looks at how search engines can affect voters by suggesting negative or positive search terms when a political candidate’s name is entered into the search bar. Dr. Epstein’s research found that when negative search terms are suggested for a candidate, it can have a dramatic effect on voter opinion.

From the study:

The voting preferences of participants who saw no search suggestions shifted toward the favored candidate by 37.1%. The voting preferences of participants in the search suggestion groups who saw only positive search suggestions shifted similarly (35.6%). However, the voting preferences of participants who saw three positive search suggestions and one negative search suggestion barely shifted (1.8%); this occurred because the negative search suggestion attracted more than 40% of the clicks (negativity bias). In other words, a single negative search suggestion can impact opinions dramatically. Participants who were shown four negative suggestions (and no positives) shifted away from the candidate shown in the search bar (-43.4%).

The researchers conclude that by using this method of manipulation, search engines can shift a “50/50 split split among people who are undecided on an issue to a 90/10 split without people’s awareness and without leaving a paper trail for authorities to follow.”

The conclusions are based on 16 months of experiments conducted with a total of 1,800 people from all 50 U.S. states. Participants in the study came from diverse ideological backgrounds, including liberal, conservative, and moderate. In order to control prior biases, participants were asked to judge political candidates that they were unfamiliar with.

Further on in the paper, the researchers reference allegations of search suggestion manipulation made against Google during the 2016 election, when the tech giant appeared to be suppressing negative search suggestions for Hillary Clinton while allowing negative suggestions for Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders to remain.

The research also notes discrepancies with Google’s current search suggestions, particularly with regards to its commercial interests. For example, entering “G” into the search bar in Google will instantly provide users with suggestions to click on search terms about other Google products – Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, and others.
...................
So if we are smart we go on a huge march to kill google as a search engine but must have another one in mind. What is the best search engine out there?

I have used several of the listed. None are perfect. But, I find dogpile the best. What I don't know and others here probably do, is which are influenced or out-rightly owned by Google?A slick maneuver by google.Obviously I want to avoid them altogether.

https://www.wired.com/story/tried-bing-search-google-microsoft/

INteresting comments here:

And Bing is big! The second-largest search engine by market share in the US, and one of the 50 most visited sites on the internet, according to Alexa rankings. (That’s the Amazon-owned analytics site, not the Amazon-made voice assistant.) I wanted to know how those people experienced the web, how much of a difference it makes when a different set of algorithms decides what knowledge you should see. The internet is a window on the world; a search engine warps and tints it.

There’s also never been a better time to give Bing an honest appraisal. If Google’s data-hoovering didn’t creep you out before, its attitude toward location tracking and Google+ privacy failings should. And while privacy-focused search options like DuckDuckGo go further to solve that problem, Bing is the most full-featured alternative out there. It’s the logical first stop on the express train out of Googletown.

A minor spoiler: This isn’t an excuse to dunk on Bing. It’s also not an extended “Actually, Bing Is Good” counterpoint. It’s just one person’s attempt to figure out what Bing is today, and why.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bing_(search_engine)

“looks like bing and yahoo are the same more or less.”

Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft’s previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing provides a variety of search services, including web, video, image and map search products. It is developed using ASP.NET.

Bing, Microsoft’s replacement for Live Search, was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009, at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego, California, for release on June 3, 2009.[3] Notable new features at the time included the listing of search suggestions while queries are entered and a list of related searches (called “Explore pane”) based on semantic technology from Powerset,[4] which Microsoft had acquired in 2008.[5]

In July 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search.[6] All Yahoo! Search global customers and partners made the transition by early 2012.[7] The deal was altered in 2015, meaning Yahoo! was only required to use Bing for a “majority” of searches.[8]

In October 2011, Microsoft stated that they were working on new back-end search infrastructure with the goal of delivering faster and slightly more relevant search results for users. Known as “Tiger”, the new index-serving technology had been incorporated into Bing globally since August that year.[9] In May 2012, Microsoft announced another redesign of its search engine that includes “Sidebar”, a social feature that searches users’ social networks for information relevant to the search query.[10]

As of October 2018, Bing is the third largest search engine globally, with a query volume of 4.58%, behind Google (77%) and Baidu (14.45%). Yahoo! Search, which Bing largely powers, has 2.63%.[11]

The average young person uses a Bay Area MegaCorp product several hours a day for a continuous basis and can potentially be exposed to thousands of tiny tweakable cues during that time so its not really an exaggeration if you think about it.

They don’t have to even do anything obvious. Just something as simple as tweaking the algorithm controlling the order on a trending page seen by billions of people a day could do it for a close election.

Well at least this way they can have their informed choice for freebees made before they illegally enter this country!

Why can’t PDJT find some conservative billionaire friends who can work with Parlor(?) And Duckduckgo and then once a great rollout plan is hatched, then tweet it and ask us to do our part...
