H.R. 40, which was named for the post-Civil War promise of "40 acres and a mule" as compensation for former slaves, has languished in the House since former Rep. John Conyers first introduced it in 1989. But Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee reintroduced the bill in January. Reparations used to be a fringe idea — at least among white politicians — but it's been receiving more attention from mainstream Democrats in the 2020 presidential campaign. Many of the declared Democratic presidential candidates have staked a position on reparations, or at least support having a national conversation about the issue. Jackson Lee said in her opening remarks that H.R. 40 would be a "long overdue" response to slavery.

“By 1776, Jefferson was one of the largest planters in Virginia. However, the value of his property (land and slaves) was increasingly offset by his growing debts, which made it very difficult to free the people he kept forced in to slavery, and thereby lose them as assets.

“In his writings on American grievances justifying the Revolution, he attacked the British for sponsoring human trafficking to the colonies.

“In 1778, with Jefferson’s leadership, slave importation was banned in Virginia, one of the first jurisdictions worldwide to do so.

“Jefferson was a lifelong advocate of ending the trade and as president led the effort to criminalize the international slave trade that passed Congress and he signed in 1807, shortly before Britain passed a similar law.

“In 1779, as a practical solution to end the legal enslavement of humans, Jefferson supported gradual emancipation, training, and colonization of African-American slaves rather than unconditional manumission, believing that releasing unprepared people with no place to go and no means to support themselves would only bring them misfortune.

“In 1784, Jefferson proposed federal legislation banning slavery in the New Territories of the North and South after 1800, which failed to pass Congress by one vote.

“In his Notes on the State of Virginia, published in 1785, Jefferson expressed the beliefs that slavery corrupted both masters and slaves alike, supported colonization of freed slaves, promoted the idea that African-Americans were inferior in intelligence, and that emancipating large numbers of slaves made slave uprisings more likely.

quote “Booker said that the nation has “yet to truly acknowledge and grapple with the racism and white supremacy that tainted this country’s founding and continues to cause persistent and deep racial disparities and inequality”

um... yo Booker... it’s called AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and was acknowledged and grappled with LOOOONG ago. Sorry you didn’t get the memo!

“tainted this country’s founding”

Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland were independent states.

They didn’t have to join the newly created United States.

A slavery exception had to be carved out for them.

George III would have been happy to let plantation owners keep their slaves to gain a renewed foothold for Great Britain in the South.

In 30 years, will a reparations bill be introduced on behalf of the people who were made slaves by this bill? I mean, forcing someone to work and give their product to another IS slavery.

But probably most so called “blacks “ are actually bi-racial, like Obama. So how does this get sorted out?

No coincidence that this surfaces on Juneteenth, (June 19th) the day slavery was officially ended in Texas and a semi holiday for some Black people.

I work in tourism . In a locale where 20 years ago you used to see very very few blacks . Tourists or otherwise . Throughout the Obama years I saw very few blacks , individuals or families , coming through . They really stood out , because there were so few . For all his talk about elevating “ his people” , semi-black Obama didn’t seem to be doing too much for them recreation-wise. Now however , since the election of Donald Trump visible black traveler tourism has gone through the roof . Personal direct , constant observation here . Individuals , lots of entire families , all with plenty of luggage. The black women tourists often sport fancy , costly beauty shop hairdo’s , lots of bling jewelry , and are quite often (very) overweight . It is very clear to me that they are living a fairly well-off lifestyle ,wherever they are coming from , wherever they live . These are the folks that we are told deserve ‘reparations’ , for wrong done to remote , possible , ancestors . Yea? For what ? More travel ? More expensive hairdo’s ? More bling ? More food ? I would say that black folks should be real happy that their lot in this world is so good NOWADAYS . And for those speaking to Congressional committees : stop ur whinin , it’s over , get over it .

The 2020 campaign slogans write themselves:

Attention machismo Hispanic men: Democrats want you to wear dresses and pay reparations to blacks.

Blacks had just about turned the corner in the 50s and then LBJ came along and put them back on the dem plantation...if it weren’t for all the “free gifts” and other crap (read “reparations on the installment plan”), this discussion would not be happening - whenever it rises back up, you can bet the dems see signs that Blacks are trending towards self-responsibility again and they need to be demoralized with propaganda to keep them down...
