AMC and quality usually didn’t go in the same sentence.
They are too small to be a big seller here. Americans like large Tatas
“Back in the late 70s-80s GM produced econoboxes like the Chevy Chevette and the Pontiac J-2000. Junkarooskies too.”
Lets not forget the mighty Vega.
Guaranteed to start rusting before delivery to the dealer.
They built a nice Jeep though. And their AMX is a sought
after ride. I’ve got a 40 year old CJ7 that’s still
running strong. They did have styling problems with
their passenger car line up. The Gremlin and Pacer are
prime examples.
Those two cylinder Renault’s that used to be floating around in Europe for many years, and a few in the US, was actually a fairly reliable car and one that was easy to turn wrenches on in the comfort of your own backyard.

Mitsubishi only comes along as Nissan did a take under after it was determined Mitsubishi was misrepresenting the emissions on the engines they were supplying to Nissan.
Renault actually controlled
production of Jeeps last year
with them. (before Chrysler
bought the Jeep brand).
This from the WIKI:

Edit
In 1979, Renault entered into an agreement with American Motors Corporation (AMC) to sell cars in the US.[221] A year later, Renault acquired a 22.5% interest in AMC.[222] This was not the first time the two companies had worked together. In the early 1960s, Renault assembled CKD kits and marketed Ramblers in France.[223] In 1982, Renault increased its stake in AMC to 46.4%.[224] The Renault Alliance/Encore (a modified version of the Renault 9 and 11) entered production in the US, but following AMC’s continued decline, Renault withdrew from the US in 1987 and sold its share to Chrysler.
If I’m correct, wasn’t a Yugo basically a Fiat made in Yugoslavia? Of course we all remember what a wonderful little car that was.
