I suspect his documentation is fraudulent—ALL of it!
So a truck driver couldn’t read English? WTF???
“BTW, are trucks like this still stick shifts? Just wondering if he could have downshifted one gear at a time.”
Downshifting to slow down works just fine with an auto trans, as does using a lower gear to keep from using your brakes too much coming down a mountain.
Jake brakes work fine with an auto trans in a big rig as well.
It does not matter if they did fail.
The driver had at least 4 miles of level road from the end of the I-70 downslope to the crash site. A competent driver could have downshifted and coasted to a stop by then.
A competent driver would have ditched the truck in the runaway stop lanes on the downslope. You don't need to read the signs to know what those lanes are for.
A really competent (and experienced) driver would probably not lose brakes on that downslope. Thousands of them manage that task successfully every day.
Incompetence kills people. That driver should spend a decade in jail then be deported. The company that put him in that truck should be destroyed. The executives of that company should be sanctioned.
The vast majority are still manual transmissions.
The problem is the transmissions are not synchronized so you have to double clutch to shift and the rpm’s have to be in a certain range. If the land speed is too high going down a hill and you attempt to downshift and miss the rpm’s you’ve screwed the pooch because you will NEVER get it back into gear, you’re freewheeling until you loose speed, hit something or roll over.
Best bet is to have your rig in the low gear you’ll need to keep your speed down before you ever start down the hill. Let the engine do the braking instead of your brakes.
The old rule of thumb was whatever gear you use to climb the hill is the gear you use to descend the hill.
It was reported he was calculating his mileage at 70 mph not paying attention to the road.. no drugs reported that I recall.
23 year old truck driver kills many.
Lawmakers are now lowering the truck driver age to 18 years old.
Plus with the Spanish surname, many Mexican trucks are being allowed to drive in the USA, with vastly lower standards.
Fatalities are rising, watch out for that huge truck rolling down the highway.
The brakes did not fail. The driver did.
He did not know how to drive big semi truck brakes. It ain’t a car.
A proper pre, mid,& post trip inspection on a large truck, take about 9 hours, out of 8 working hours. Inspections are to cover the State’s behind.
You cannot downshift an out of control truck. His brakes failed because he used them wrongly. You cannot train a non English driver proper truck driving.
Most 4 wheelers understand nothing useful about trucks. It is a highly regulated, controlled industry with rising fatalities due to over control.
He lost control coming down off the continental divide. His brakes may well have been cooked, he was in too high a gear and blew past runaway truck ramps (maybe because he can't read English?).

Didn't say it made it better. Just pointing out he wasn't an illegal but rather came
in legally. Going back a few generations to 1492 and there wasn't anything on the
land but the indigenous people. Humans have been coming here for eons.
Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos so what the f is this 4 fn names? seriously! Does this make him more legit? do you think that some one may have gotten him confused with Rogel mederos
I wonder if they got Miranda Veracruz de la Hoya Cardinal to report on this story?
JB Hunt has been driving to Mexico for 25 years. They just opened another office in Querétaro, Mexico. But most of the drivers are Mexican very few Americans driving in Mexico.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Thanks for that information, I’ve been looking all over for something on that aspect.
His breaks went out. This is hilarious. He will be WAAAAAY beyond “reasonable doubt” if the jury is all monkeys. What a waste of marijuana tax money.
I agree. Faulty trunk!! The driver was a KID!@!
