You are almost on to it, the “it” being the flaw in the study.

The study has it backwards, at least for some people: If one drinks heavily after hours, then they are more likely to feel like (insert expletive of your choice) while at work. If one feels bad, they are more likely to have to force that smile, rather than have it come naturally.

I exclude from the above: Natural sourpusses (of which we have quite a number on FR) and those who come to work “loaded”.

I work in IT and get calls a couple times a week selling IT services. Sometimes the call starts out with a straight-forward sales introduction but more often something like this: “Hi, this is Dana! How are you doing today?” In the most false-enthusiastic, false-cheery tone you could imagine. Gives me the creeps like fingernails on chalkboard. My first thoughts are “I don’t know you and you don’t give a rat’s patoot about my day.”

But sometimes I think: you have to do this all day. It sucks to be you.
