Deer hunting season is sacred with most workers taking first day off to go to cabins
2/3 of the males above 16 own firearms (often many)
To subject most the population to being treated as criminals
with registration and annual background checks is not going to go over well
The bad/insane folks are not going to abide by that law...got any other ideas?

Then, if they threaten stronger enforcement, tell them...
"GO AFTER REAL CRIMINALS AND LEAVE US ALONE!"

Interesting that there were no police in the Americas from Independence till the 1840s. Enforcement of laws was in the hands of the local sheriff and the Militias.
