Here is my theory. I got grades, I had 2-3 hours of HW every night, I got a trophy when I won, I worked and worked to get some kind of praise that I was OK. Now I have 2 Master’s degrees and did real well in Corporate America becoming an Exec. If it got hard, I never gave up. I will show you was my battle cry. I was ambitious.

Today kids don’t get homework, they want to eliminate HW, we have participation trophies and everyone is equal. They eliminate drive and ambition as everyone is OK. If things get hard they quit as everything was made easy for them. Unrealistic.

We are no longer a meritocracy

Post of the thread right there.

My buddy was talking about his little brother’s kids a while back. His brother is also a friend and I know the kids. They are both really nice well adjusted young men. The older one is the starting quarterback on his college team and was the offensive newcomer of the year in his conference. Both are high level athletes as was their dad. My buddy said he was worried about his nephews. He said “Do you know those kids have never had a job where they had to actually work for a paycheck? They have no clue what they are going to experience for the first time when they go to work and that is really scary”.

I think that parents do a real disservice to their kids when they allow them to go through junior high and high school without having some sort of a job. I think that is really what this article is all about and what I got out of your post. How can you be a good employee when you have no idea what real work is all about because you have never done it before?

I was talking to some of my younger co workers recently and commented “You know what my white privelege is? Having a dad that grew up in the Depression who put a boot in my ass any time he thought I was being lazy. My wife (who is a high level HR person in her company) gave a eulogy for my dad when he passed away back in ‘05. She said the greatest gift that my dad gave to me and my siblings was to instill his work ethic in us. I have always agreed with that statement.
