[I’m 69 years old. Ever since I was old enough to read and write, I’ve heard about the “Po’, underpaid schoolteachers.”

They’ve made begging into a science.]

They’re not begging. They’re demanding. Given their numbers and therefore political heft, it’s effective more often than not. That’s why, on average, teachers get paid a lot better than their qualifications would command in the private sector.

How much do they complain about having to purchase school supplies out of their own pockets. That’s another big fat whiny lie. I have relatives who are teachers, I’ve subbed the whole time we had kids in school, volunteered and helped out with after school activities and every time something was going on. Bottom line, I’ve seen the bs. I’ve seen the laziness. I’ve seen the copy machine room filled with wasted paper. I’ve seen outside garbage dumpsters filed to the top with brand spanking new still in the store wrappers of school supplies from packages of notebook paper to scissors to kleenex to expensive algebra function calculators. Check the dumpsters at the end of the school year and it’ll make you sick.

Teachers need raises

That's all you ever hear in CA where they're constantly demanding raises for teachers. Those people have some of the easiest jobs yet want raises every year. I think teachers in CA work maybe 7 or 8 months or so out of the year. Yet the fake news is always telling us how much they need raises...I find that very odd.

And how come we never hear about plumbers, roofers, electricians, cab drivers, painters etc., demanding raises?

My Dad was a teacher. He worked his tail off. It was not 8 hour days. He came home and worked a few hours in the evening. He did not complain about his pay. He hated the union. He did take on extra classes to teach and, when I was a teen, he took a tax prep class so he could work a 2nd job. He continued to do taxes til he retired and then, my parents opened their own tax prep company. His pension could not support them. He never made more than probably about $35K as an educator but he loved teaching. He still (in his 80’s) hears from former students. He made a big difference to many. My Dad is a staunch conservative.
So, there are exceptions. In addition, my folks made lots of sacrifices so that my Mom could stay at home. We did not have what many of my farmer schoolmates could afford but, we were happy. I am so grateful for the childhood they gave me.

Texas teacher pay is a bit under average. The legislature screwed the teachers over on COLAs and health insurance. Other state retired employees get regular increases and just about all their healthcare covered. Retired teaches haven’t had a COLA in over 15 years and retired teacher out of pocket expenses can eat up most of their retirement check.

Legislature won’t even balance out what teachers and all the other state employees have to pay for healthcare. The Texas legislature is part of the the Texas government employee retirement and health system, so they don’t really care about the active and retired teachers.

I am anti-union, but if any group of government employees need a union, it is the active and retired teachers in Texas.

They way Texas treats teachers is a disgrace.

Not in Texas. It is disgraceful how retired teachers are treated.

PLEASE, Texas, DO NOT elect this idiot as your Governor so he can use it as a springboard to usurping the Oval Office.

I voted against the swarmy bastard. Don't need any more Bushes in politics IMO. I've had enough. I'll continue to vote against as long as I'm able.

Pretty much by definition almost half our states will be paying teachers under the average at any time. Yet that’s constantly used as a reason for states to keep upping the compensation.

Crazy vacation time, among the lowest of college grad test scores, mega benefits including ridiculous pensions, and insane job security. Can’t possibly be underpaid in that equation.

The retirement pay and benefits in Texas are horrible. Last year, the total deductible for my wife and I was $13,000 and monthly premium were $650. The deductible wasn’t $6,500 per person, it was $13,000 total for both of us.

That’s been standard for people since Obamacare.

Not good, but the usual.
