He did not say, “there was no need to fake it” he said “there could not have been” such fakery (it was unthinkable) and a Smollett would not have come out of it still feeling like a victim.
Maybe he meant what you said, but he didn’t say it.
Such fakery would not have occurred in the 1960's.
I wonder if this behavior is something akin to Munchausen Syndrome...
Back in California in the '80s I was a programmer in a manufacturing plant. The computer operator was a black kid with a good sense of humor.
One day we were talking about TV and someone said "Boy, did you ever miss a good show!" He puffed up and used the "Don't call me boy!" routine. Naturally, whenever we could, we used "Boy" in our conversations with him.
He went to visit some relatives in Mississippi and came back with some interesting tales. He said "You guys know how I play huffy over the 'boy' routine. Well, I'm in a country store back there when two white guys come in. At some point, one of 'em says to me 'Hey, boy.' I looked that dumb redneck in the eye and said 'Yassuh?' I'm no frigging idiot."
We were rolling on the floor at that one.
Things have changed but not for the better culturally.
Back then there was no hate crime, gender fluidity, nor the delusions of “identifying” yourself as something you’re not, and the rest of us having to go along with your delusions.
In many (most?) other ways, our society has gone absolutely haywire.
not going to praise McWhorter too much. he also writes:
“We are also just past watching legions of people who should have known better refuse to credit Christine Blasey Fords accusation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.”
