One thing the courts don't like is a guy who blames others; disrespects the court and the police; and makes the state put on a trial when the evidence is overwhelming.
What the courts do like is when the defendant admits their mistake; apologizes to those they hurt; accepts punishment, and works with the prosecution to avoid an expensive and time-consuming trial.
This case could be plead with probation, but Smollett is going to drive this thing until it runs out of gas. The judge is going to be pissed. My guess is a maximum sentence.
