This is from our neighborhood Facebook page:
“I saw the plane explode in the air. The engine caught on fire which caused the explosion. The right wing blew off and the plane nose dove towards the ground.”
Apparently he’s not the only one who saw this. The plane appears to have been headed northwest.
And this was a turbine engine, right?
Oh my, Turbo let go? Jug or Jugs coming completely off? IMMIC this is a Turbo 550 Continental or 520 series depending if it is stock or a RAM upgrade.
So these were reciprocating engines. Thought I had seen a jet turbine exhaust.
“And this was a turbine engine, right?”
taildragger seems to think so, and I’ll defer to him.
I’m not a pilot, I just know a few and learn bits and pieces about aviation from listening to them.
Standard equipment on the Cessna 414A is piston, specifically the Continental TSIO-520-J, a turbocharged, six-cylinder reciprocating engine that uses a gearbox to reduce shaft speed at the propeller.
The reduction gearboxes have been a source of mechanical failure over the years.
2 blocks from where my sister used to live. They’ve moved to the end of La Palma up the hill now.
Still not far.
Very sorry for the loss of life.
That “flip or flop” couple lived in that area I think.
“Theyve moved to the end of La Palma up the hill now.”
Brave. Serious fire country in that ‘hood. I’m pretty sure that the massive 2008 Freeway Complex Fire went right through there. I’d want an all concrete house.
I know! Their house is stucco. Worth close to two mil. Huge with Beautiful views, and that fire came up their hill too close for comfort. My brother in law would love to get out of there. He hates to drive anywhere now that he’s retired. But my sister won’t budge.
I contacted him...and he knows a guy with a plane like that....but he does not know if it's the same guy.
That’s always going to be a fire zone with that wilderness right next to them. And Chino Hills State Park will be loaded with fuel after all of this rain.
Nothing like a 60 foot high flame front with a Santa Ana Wind at its back to add excitement to your life.
LA Times is reporting that the plane took off from Fullerton Municipal 10 minutes before it crashed, and that the pilot is considered a regular there. No name given.

5 Dead After Small Plane Crashes Into Yorba Linda Home
https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2019/02/03/firefighters-respond-to-report-of-plane-down-in-yorba-linda/
the time stamp on the video matches the crash.
Catastrophic engine failure and fire took wing off plane before pilot could affect an emergency landing. Reported by one source an emergency was declared to the tower by pilot. Witnesses on ground describe plane on fire and one wing separating from aircraft followed by flight departure and wing over and crash into neighborhood. Debris on ground shows one wing and engine and propeller on the ground in the opposite direction of flight path into the house that it hit and hundreds of yards away matching witness description of inflight fire and breakup. Prayers for families of all affected by accident.
Prayers up. I used to live near there too. How ghastly. What could make a plane explode in the air like that? Those poor people in their home waiting for the Super Bowl. Now gone.
There’s cell phone video of the plane coming down.
It looks like both wings came off in the air. That’s kind of unusual isn’t it?
Pilot friend tells me it’s very rare. Majority of light plane crashes involve pilot error is his opinion.
I'd guess...my friend knows of,,,or knows the plane,,,and/or pilot.
Fullerton AP...is a small AP...and fairly,,most regulars know everyone...
He has not as of yet...let me know.
