Nearly all people from Chile that I know are either pro-Pinochet or ambivalent...

Pinochet was a savior of Chile. He removed the head of the communist snake, but left Chilean society free to develop however a free people saw fit. He protected property rights, and left all the institutions of civil society untouched - the church, unions, sports clubs, even media, etc., etc. When Pinochet left, there was no clique, no cult of personality, and few cronies in power.

Its why free, open and fair elections were so easy to move towards - because the foundation of civil society survived and thrived under Pinochet

Philippines had Marcos until they got tired of him. Stepping down at the right time is the problem.

Then two years after the coup they invited free-market economist Milton Freidman and his “Chicago Boys” over for some economic tutelage. And as mentioned: today Chile is probably freest and richest nation in Latin America.

Most people don't know this. Nor do they know that Friedman was an important "behind the scenes" advisor to Reagan and was instrumental in Reagan Tax cuts.

Allende had his own kill lists several times more lengthy than the total that disappeared under Pinochet.

In very similar fashion Fujimori saved Peru at a time when Shining Path had taken almost all of Peru and was advancing into the outskirts of the capital. He had no political experience, but stepped and took the job. He turned the military and secret police loose and destroyed the communists in a very bloody fight.

Once it was safe for the “normies” to resume power they arrested him for corruption and human rights abuses. Basically he did what they were unable to do, which was wage war on people who wanted them all dead.

He is the savior of Peru, whether they want to recognize it or not.
