Because it belongs to the American people and not the government. Unfortunately, leftist a-holes have to put on a show (in this case literally a s**t show) to convince everybody our country will go to hell in a hand-basket without “big mother” to watch over us. I climbed Guadalupe peak in 95 or 96 during the shutdown, we were told by the ranger that we’d end up paying for our own rescue if we needed it (they still maintained the sign-in list for people climbing the mountain). We were careful, and everything went fine, and nobody tried to trash the park at the time.
Yes; people have been doing just exactly what you did for tens of thousands of years.

Because it’s our fing land. I was up there last weekend and the visitors center was closed. That’s all I noticed. Everything I saw was open... Even the bathrooms.

If there are no potties, then the park needs to be closed to the public.
