In twelve years of school....we had one single book mandated (Uncle Tom’s Cabin). Oddly, it wasn’t the English instructor who mandated it (history teacher).

“Lennon admitted later in life that he said a lot of stupid and naive stuff.”

But did Lenin say that?

Snooze
Ron Charles is paid to be a book critic. Seems like he’s just trying to score some points with the SJW crowd with this review.

10 or so years later, much funnier: “Do Black Patent -leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?” By John R. Powers.

They weren’t against the system there. That was a bed-in for peace in 1969. Altamont, riots, Vietnam. Wanting a little peace isn’t so bad. The maid worked for a wage, he was probably cool to her and gave her a nice tip. He came from a poor background.

How could the story of a young man in transition from youth to young adulthood, learning that the world is full of phonies and perverts and that one should look for beauty in the world, not be relevant?

Agreed. As a child you might believe that all is good, beautiful and true but the awakening is brutal when you find it isn't. I've run across a few young adults stuck in the "phony" stage that have a lot of difficulty overcoming it. A common thread seemed to be the lack of a positive role model (father).

Yes, it is still quite relevant.

To get me to read in high school was like pulling teeth. I loved Cliff Notes, but The Catcher was different. I read it twice and really enjoyed discussing it in class. That’s probably not a good thing.

I wasted a fair amount of time reading this story about a paranoid, if not psychotic, young man with zero likability. There is no reason that you can be sympathe with the main character. It makes for very boring book. Make that BORING.

I read it to see what all the fuss is about. I didn’t find it. Don’t waste your time.

We had to read it in class around 1960. I never did understand what it was trying to say.

Indeed, it was merely about teen angst in a world which is not understandable. Its post-modern nihilism.

I’m genuinely amazed that that photo has never become a scathing meme to the excesses of limousine liberalism.

Heroin user (son Sean was born addicted and had to be hospitalised), wife beater, bully, homosexual, responsible for a few deaths, anti-Christian, communist, horrible human not seeking redemption. And his musicianship was way lacking. He was good at deception. He knew the piper was coming, but I don’t think he was ready to pay. He was a man-child, he would have loved obama.

He was apparently voting conservative in his last years. How was he “responsible for a few deaths”?

OK, I know what nihilism is but what is post-modern-nihilism?
