"After the remark went viral, the outrage came quickly from civil rights activists like Corey Wiggins, executive director of Mississippi's NAACP state chapter.
"The act of lynching is not a joking matter," Wiggins said.
Hyde-Smith has dismissed the criticism. In a statement, she said her joke about her willingness to attend a public hanging with the supporter was meant as an "exaggerated expression of regard" and "any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous."

"Any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous" ---- yet, most likely very effective.

... another source on the subject.
So what? Are you some kind of squish idiot?
When you say something stupid you immediately stop talking and/or change the subject! Never never try and explain or try and clarify what you said! All you do is keep the “gaffe” going in “the news” and dig yourself a deeper hole!
In politics, going on the defensive is a losing strategy. Trump is right to defend her. But his defense is attacking the media.
Attack the media and point out their hypocrisy at every occasion. Attack them for their fake news, bias, elitism and the enforcement of PC speech. This is not consistent with Miss values.
she should tell them not to get all ‘wee wee’d up’ over it

I am pretty sure lots of white men were publicly hanged in the old West, no? These people are idiots.
The left is hanging on to her every word.

Your question is quite ignorant.
Yet, I believe there is a strong possibility that you, central va, are actually even MORE IGNORANT than your lame question.
Take a nap.
“yet, most likely very effective.”
Which says more about the people for whom it is effective than it does about her.
i had not heard of that incident, but yes, sounds very believable that people would have a conniption over that kind of remark.
sad!
If Chris McDaniel had been appointed to this seat, it’s safe to say he wouldn’t be making dumb comments like this.
Thanks for making it worse, Mr. President.
Incidentally, in the year 2526, it will once again be OK to discuss public hangings in Mississippi (as opposed to mob lynchings).
Why are all you noob’s always rude?
This is not DU
“There is a difference between racial lynchings and frontier-justice public hangings. She should clarify.”
Exactly! We used to hang “outlaws”. We used to hang murderers.
Hundreds would attend public hangings. They were the public “events” of their time.
Words mean things. “Hanging” is/was legal. Lynching is/was ILLEGAL.
I’m POSITIVE that when she said that, she didn’t have a mind picture of a Negro being lynched.
Having said all that.....
What a STUPID thing to say! Especially for a politician in MISSISSIPPI!
Because when youre running for office in a highly charged environment thats hostile to your political party, its on you to think twice about your comments. The same sh*t happened to George Allen here in VA in 06. His re-election was all but assured, then on that fateful day, let his guard down, made that macaca remark and then paid for it on Election Day.
I fervently hope she wins; we need the seat... but she committed a very boneheaded unforced error here. I hope she recovers.
She should say she will apologize when the DNC apologizes for all the hangings they actually attended.
I hope she wins, but she did her campaign no favors.
