Shortly after arriving in SF for the first time, I was going past the ritzy St. Francis hotel. An obviously wealthy couple was walking out of the front door past the uniformed doorman. Right in front, an older homeless 'musician' was beating, with blood flying, an encroaching young homeless 'musician'.

A fine example of the variety of SF. This was 30 years ago. I don't want to see it today.

While this is true to a degree, it only applies to a relatively small percentage (note that I got "hands on" exposure as a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul). To move to another city requires a significant degree of motivation. The mentally ill fraction are incapable of it, the junkie fraction won't leave their drug connection.
