Nashville was never Republican except for a brief time during Reconstruction. Nashville never experienced the kind of politicized racial division in the ‘60s and ‘70s that pushed many of the Whites into the GOP and they stuck with the Democrats (unlike in Memphis where the Whites went GOP and Knoxville and Chattanooga, which were already GOP-leaning). It did vote for Nixon in ‘72, Reagan in 1984 and Bush Sr. in 1988, but that was the last time they voted that way for President. The suburbs are GOP, though.
