Fecking ijits! Mother of Mary, ya fecking ijits!
I lived in the Dublin suburbs in the late 70s to early 80s and never heard the anti-Israel pro-Palestinian” noise. My late father was open about being Jewish (my mother is Catholic and I was raised Catholic myself), and if it was ever prevalent back then, I would have undoubtedly heard it.
This was later than that in the late 90s and 2000s. The priest was from Limerick and the conversation happened in 2004. I always got the feeling a lot of this was misplaced sympathy by people thinking the Palestinians were mistreated by Israel as the Irish were by England. Saw some Palestinian flags flying around Dublin, too, on our visits. Not saying everyone feels that way but there is definitely a leftist bent in Ireland that has become much more prevalent over the last twenty years.
Some of the most opinionated, intolerant and biased creatures on earth are Irish priests. God bless your father for standing up to that priest.
