McCain obviously never heard of Mohammed Mossadegh (Iran); Jacobo Arbenz (Guatemala); the Diem brothers (South Vietnam); Sal Allende (Chile). Given their fates at the hands of CIA-orchestrated coups, I would imagine they would have preferred a few pamphlets and other electioneering.
