I recently reread Jefferson's June 1, 1795, letter to Tench Coxe.
"Dear Sir:The mission of our military is to protect that "light and liberty" and to continue now, as in Jefferson's day, to "turn away 'darkness and oppression,' from whatever source it is coming--from inside ideologies or from the outside enemies of freedom and light.
". . . .""I congratulate you on the successes of our two allies. those of the Hollanders are new, and therefore pleasing. It proves there is a god in heaven, and that he will not slumber without end on the iniquities of tyrants, or would-be tyrants, as their Stadtholder. This ball of liberty, I believe most piously, is now so well in motion that it will roll round the globe, at least the enlightened part of it, for light & liberty go together. obama was speaker in 2013 when my son graduated USNA. Even the sky had the sense to weep when he was speaking ... it was raining.
But once he left, the sun came out and it was a glorious day!
