Pennsylvanians would give anything for 23 cent state tax. New Jersey is pretty cheep in comparison especially since they actually have workers doing the pumps in jersey.
New Jersey is just one big craphole. The best thing to do with it is to make it into a big cesspool. Oh wait, it already is.
Let me get this straight. If gasoline sales fall to one gallon, then that customer (e.g. some New Yorker) will pay over a billion dollars in tax.
But officials are clearly determined to made the state the very *smelliest* cesspool in the country.
Laffer Curve.
The main reason they had so much gas sales were the low taxes compared to nearby states.
Everyone I know would wait specifically to fill up if they were going to Jersey. Especially truckers.
If their taxes approach nearby states, there will be a HUGE drop in gas purchases in Jersey.
One supposes that, to these profligate Marxists, cutting expenses is completely off the table...?
They VOTED for this government, and they got this government.
I live in ct.my son lives in South Jersey,we drive occasionally to visit.
Until recently when Jersey hiked their tax 23 cents which made the price of gas equal to the cost of gas in ct. On the way home when we passed the last rest stop in jersey, there were always long lines at each gas pump, all the ct. Drivers stopping to fill up to save the extra 23 cents a gallon before heading back home.
Jersey has lost that revenue, this past weekend there were no lines at the pumps
People in NJ did wake up - and they’ve been fleeing for years. A previous Dem governor admitted that without ILLEGAL immigration, NJ had lost population (and we lost representation in the House because of it) - that is why dying states want the borders left open (they need “clients”). The death spiral of NJ and neighboring NY hasn’t been slowed at all by the recovery in other regions; our tax burdens, along with decaying infrastructure with nobody left to pay for the repairs, guarantee the slow death will go on.
IIRC, this was an ADDITIONAL $.23 tax - not the total.
I read an additional 3 or 4 cents.
You raise the price (with a tax), so people conserve more, so your expected revenues are not made.
So what does stupid do? Raise the tax again, which will cause the price at the pump to go up, which will cause drivers to cut back on their driving, which will again lead to lower than expected revenues. Eventually the stupids of New Jersey will be as stupid as the stupids of California and have the highest gas taxes in the country and still be disappointed in what revenues they get from them.
The beatings will continue until morale increases.
People, who can, are fleeing the insanity and sewer that is now California, a state that used to be beautiful. San Francisco looks like and smells like a third-world country.
May Jerry Brown, Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, Xavier Becera, and the rest of their insane Liberal ilk rot for eternity together with other Liberal hacks who are destroying the USA in every city and state in this country. They’re a plague conceived by and sent by Satan to destroy everything in their path. They must be voted out and thrown out of office like the garbage they are.
What is happening in parts of CA is happening statewide in NJ; American taxpayers and their employers are fleeing at a frightening pace - and the government is desperately trying little stunts to keep them here (like free community college) but not addressing the real problem: The massive government worker caste that is impoverishing us not just with high salaries/expensive benefits but retirement IOUs nobody can fund.
The 2016 gas tax increase was $.23 per gallon, raising it to $.375 per gallon total. The new governor is probably talking about adding 3 or 4 cents on top of that.
