How can they run THAT many horses?Sounds like asking for an accident. That said I’ll take Justify,Audible and Combatant. I’d like to see Restoring Hope win tho!

20 horses is the max allowed, and often 18 are actually running.

The track is wide enough.

In England they do this true cavalry charge all the time with many more.

My biggest problem is it is not representative of a typical race field. Most (including Churchill) max allow 14 - what fits in 1 gate. Most horse races only fill about 8 at best.

The Derby is a poor representation of what usually happens in a race in the US.

I’ve picked a few winners in the past-just by name, stats don’t interest me OR the horse. But I’ve never bet. My luck all my picks would be scratched. What happens to your $$ in off-line betting in that event?

Horse scratch means refund. That’s all.

I rarely go to a track (wouldn’t mind more). Used to go once or twice a year, usually on a “big” day until they ruined it by putting the Pimlico Special right prior to the BIG day and now I don’t go. It’s great seeing great horses up close and personal because except for the TC (and yes, the BC for us true race fans), tracks are very accessible. But tying every important race to the TC makes it a nightmare to get to.

I’d bet pretty much any way. I look at stats, mostly speed figures, and sometimes, I have to “hunch” bet just because of the name.

I’ll never forget my grandmother picking “Rocky Marriage” at Pimlico way back in the ‘80s, for obvious reasons!

Plenty to read at this link. Looks like I’ll go with Good Magic. It’s won $1.2 mil lifetime. Mendelssohn is second with $700k. Justify - $32k. Should be a great race!
