Interestingly, Jefferson and Adams had a similar falling out due to the campaign in the 1800 Presidential Election (which was so bitter, it should be the standard against which all bitter and nasty campaigns are measured.
close call. 1800 was certainly the birth of party politics.

but the election of 1828 was so vicious that it probably killed rachel jackson -- andrew jackson certainly thought so.

He was the greatest of the Founding Fathers.

He authored the Declaration of Secession (ie Independence) and championed the cause of liberty and the principle that government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed.

He fought against the centralization of power and was clearly correct in identifying the tendency of government - to seek to centralize power and concentrate it into ever fewer hands to the detriment of liberty.

Those were interesting times in our history...I have had the opportunity to go to the Quincy estate in Massachusetts several times...fascinating tour...and next week, will be this:

indeed. there has been a great deal of additional scholarship recently (sally hemmings utterly aside) that fairly well destroys the TJ myth that has endured for centuries. most of what everybody “knows” about the man is wrong. that’s basically history out of a coloring book.

Jefferson had been bedridden for two or three weeks before his death.
His grandson Randolph said that Jefferson seemed determined to live long enough to see the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Ironically, the President at the time of his death was John Quincy Adams, the son of his old friend and once enemy John Adams.

Both Adams and Jefferson were fascinating men. Each had their own strengths and faults.
