Gowdy strikes me as not all that politically ambitious. He is self aware of his conspicuous talent for articulation and his ability to convincingly slice and dice and debate anyone, anywhere, on matters of law, and he is proud to profess his love of Justice, whom he often calls the “Lady with a Blindfold”.
His critics fault him for failing to effect justice, while investigations were under the likes of Eric Holder. LOL! I distinctly remember hearing Gowdy warn against expecting any resolutions while under a Justice Department run by Eric Holder.
I can listen to Gowdy all day long. I’m happy he has now the highest of security clearances to see, hear, read and view anything of Top Security.
Not sure about hapless seat warmer Sessions in the Justice Department, but with Trump in the White House, Gowdy has a heck of a better chance than ever under Holder to effectively cause misery and consequences to all the right people.

But if it were a joke, Chris, then was it also a joke to mention the insurance policy? Was it also a joke to talk about impeachment the morning after President Trump won? Was it also a joke to say, I have no interest in participating in an investigation if he's going to be cleared.
There's a pattern. And Republicans are better served by letting the texts speak for themselves. I have no idea what they meant by that. I don't know if it was a joke or not. It's not my job to figure it out.

Your highlighted quote is suspicious and Gowdy uses phrases like that frequently. My hope is that crap is tactical, for some good reason, to either bait the press to do.their.job., or to insult them, or best of all, to perhaps defuse someone or some entity in order to be seen as an honest broker.
Playing the reluctant warrior may provide benefits inside the judicial circles he admires most. Or, it may be that he actually is a reluctant warrior by personality or by very judicious intent.
I like him, and believed him when he complained endlessly of the lack of cooperation and denial of documents from the State Department and the cover up treatment by the Holder-run JD.

That sort of conduct is OPPOSITE of what a prosecutor does, and it is opposite of what a jury does. While Gowdy doesn't have the formal role in a legal system, he represents the people, and he ought not be reluctant to express his point of view and conclusions. Those statements are legally binding.
He doesn't come off as milquetoast or reluctant warrior. To me, he comes off as disingenuous.
But that's his baggage.

Keep in mind, that while Gowdy is a prosecutor by trade, as chairman of a congressional investigative committee he has no special powers to prosecute or judge anyone, but may only “refer” committee findings to Justice, and subpoena witnesses when necessary, who can then take the Fifth.
( Hillary’s privately paid server installer has laid on the Fifth for over a year and even longer is the IRS Director wench who enjoys her retirement pay, as well, thanks to the Fifth.)
Not sure what a committee Referral to Justice looks like, but it sounds plainly like no more than a movement of findings, hopefully showing legal cause for JD to form a Grand Jury, with intent to indict, based first on the jury “ham sandwich” determination whether to do so.
Trey is not enthusiastic about bluffing of powers he has never really possessed, I think, but with that silver tongue of his he can sure bring a convincing case to the table, leaving the Left in stunned silence, just on the merits, without flame throwing.
I'm not even looking for a referral. Just a personal conclusion "based on what I know now, could change with new facts."
FWIW, a referral is nothing more than a report to "the police" that you think a crime might have been committed. I figure Congressional reports of that nature look more formal and tend to know the law better, but substantively, anybody in the public can make a report as long as it contains observations and a claim that a crime might have been committed.

I’m disappointed in Gowdy too, when he buries the outrage and plants his judicial bias exclusively. He alternately does does both.
He is so intelligent I assumed the two approaches are strategic, related to insider maneuvering, around that damned Schiff. Ha!
