I think that position is way too general and not applicable in every case. There are several categories of sins here that have different ways they are dealt with….
There are many instances where confession is performed totally in private…. for example, a sin that is only against God is confessed only to God. Psalm 51:4 “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.”
There is the case where the sin is against a specific person…. in that case confession and the request for forgiveness is only required for the person who is sinned against. God of course is all knowing and can see that the confession and forgiveness was done and He’d be pleased by that.
A special subset of this case of just two people is the one where the roles are reversed as far as who is doing the sinning. The mechanism for dealing with this is laid out in Matthew 18:15-17 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.”
Another special subset is when the sin is between two people but others know about it and are thus involved. In that case, confession and the request for forgiveness is to those whom have been sinned against and to those who know about the sin. Why is that? It’s because as fellow Christians, they have an obligation to bring to restoration any who sin. Galatians 6:1 “Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”
This issue is whether Galatians 6:1 would apply to this case. However, as a Christian we are commanded to confess our sins to others….. James 5:16 “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Why is this done? As pointed out in the verse… it’s so the sinner can be healed. Is there a context for this verse that suggests that the confession is only to a circle of those around us, the church, the community etc.? What is the ‘community’ around a Christian who is also a politician and lives in a State with Christians who care for him and about him?
I think it safe to say that the issue of ‘private versus public sin’ is a valid one…. however, in your reply you used the word ‘confession’ whereas in your original post 41, the point you made was under the title of ‘Christian forgiveness’. I stand by my original point…. If I’m asked to show ‘Christian forgiveness’, that implies that I have some specific information about what it is that I’m being asked to forgive, no? Does it even make sense to forgive something that you don’t even know about? And if I’m being asked to forgive, that means that the sinning party has repented of his/her sin, no? I don’t know how one is supposed to get to that point without this flow of events taking place…..

I don’t expect people to love Moore. I do expect them to be fair to him. As long as GOP collapse under the “seriousness of the charge” rather than the reality of it they are setting themselves up to be blown out of the water when ever the opposition decides to go nuclear. If there was clear evidence that Moore was molesting kids I’d be the first to jump ship but I will not just abandon a candidate because some woman or a group of women from multiple decades ago crop up with wild accusations that can not be proven.
The Moore case has all the hallmarks of a smear based not on reality but on a politically motivated attempt to destroy a good man whose only crime is make many enemies both politically and as a judge. Criminals have no qualms about lying and hes put many people behind bars and in many cases just ruled against others in the cases of divorce, child custody etc.
Three of his accusers have known motive based on their interactions in court with Moore. Young Nelson in particular who also has a yearbook that she will not turn over for a simple test to prove the signature in it is Moore’s or the ink is at least genuinely 40 years old.
The damning accusation of involvement with the 14 year old has many inconsistencies related to the time line and court record from the time so many that I suspect the woman making has a mental health condition stemming from her bad family life. I believe she met Moore at the courthouse and he was kind to her and made her feel special but I don’t believe anything beyond that. I think she fixated on him and may even blame him for NOT rescuing her. All I know is that a woman who doesn’t know if she had a phone in her room or not and confuses being picked up around a corner with a location that would’ve been several miles away is not reliable. I suspect if this were really taken to court Corfman would be found to be a pathological liar. People with her type of background tend to have that problem. My wife and her sister grew up in a bad family and my wife’s sister falsely accused her step father of sex abuse because she hated him.
The media owes everyone a full picture of the accuser but of course even now they refuse and constantly repeat debunked claims. The Nytimes did report that the claim Moore was banned from the local Mall and YMCA were false but even now there are GOP that latch onto that disproven lie and the fact that it even exists suggests an even bigger conspiracy targeting Moore. I think Moore is right I guarantee many of those who are targeting him are doing it solely over his positions against ssm and abortion.
