Using night soil for fertilizer is a long - established practice in Korea. It isn’t something cooked up by Rocket Man or his family.

Does no one read history any more? Has no one heard of the Honey Bucket man?

If it’s not composted properly, and the humans have worms, worms will spread. Duh.

What Kim Jong-un did was to order them to dramatically boost night soil use.

As I said above, the situation in N. Korea is much worse. Most of Asian countries are weaning out of the practice by using chemical fertilizers. N. Korea is going back to the level of pre-industrial age when just about everybody had one parasite or another. Their dependence on night soil is increasing not decreasing. Apparently Kim Jong-un is making it worse. They have no public health system in place to contain parasite infection.

One of the first sights many of us saw in SVN was the farmers pausing to take a squat in their fields. Seems to be a common Asian fertilizer.

It is a common pre-industrial age practice in that area. They might get away with it if they boil or fry them before eating. Otherwise you end up carrying scores of uninvited residents inside your body.

Living with nature is not really a pleasant thing. Always fighting with bugs, parasites, and disease..

My Dad served in Korea.
He said “mama san” would take care of her business right there in the rice patties. Dad told me “ see those brown specks in that rice?”.
Yep.
Dad never ate rice.....

“Night Soil” Lol!!
It almost sounds like something pleasant.
They should have used the old label of
“Mountain Oysters”. That term has pretty much been retired for a long while.

Parasites do not fester like that in those parts unless people have immune defficiencies.

I don't know if parasites are always go hand in hand with immune deficiencies, but N. Korean population suffers from widespread malnutrition and endemic food shortage. Naturally they are in bad health, and probably have weak immune system.

Obvious (again) FatBoy has no concern about the rural peoples health....so he keeps them busy using whatever “self-sufficient” methods available to them to replace his gov. not providing what they promise......patting them on the head for “sacrificing” for the good of the country.

Unfortunately the rural folks are always left to themselves to obey or suck it up.....Even when they die of starvation FatBoy celebrates their ‘sacrifice’ for the country.

There should be heavy initial investment in transportation infrastructure and public health before any economic reform goes forward. It is a tall order.

Will be interesting to see if China allows another famine in N.Korea.....though I’ve read articles stating “population reduction” has been considered by Fat Boy in order to keep those in his city loyal should things get ugly.
I’m not convinced China would step in other than the black markets both Fat Boy and China allow to flourish when food is scarce.

Russia/Putin and China would agree and they have such a plan they’ve presented already......remains to be seen if it gets implemented....... The demand was that FatBoy would not fire anything for 60 days before the US would agree to ‘talks’......he’s passed that thresh-hold. ..which is why now China sent it’s people there Friday.

China is doing more than they used to. Still it is just enough to send the message that they are really unhappy with Kim by making the life of N. Korean elites “harder.” It is not a punishing blow.
