So you define what is good for you by those that find it useful for them?

Oh,and BTW...I forgot to mention that I,unlike some (including you, perhaps?), don't fall for the Whole Foods claim that their products are superior in any way to what I can find elsewhere. That was an important omission on my part because the $12/lb chicken breast that Whole Foods pushed is *absolutely* no better than the $4/lb chicken breast that my nearby market sells.

Did you even read my post? Or just decide to get offended and respond? Given you implied I might enjoy Whole Foods I assume not.

It’s more than just water in those vats. They throw in chlorine or hydrogen peroxide as well. That’s one of the reasons why current chicken doesn’t taste like chicken on the past. Yuck. Air chilled or local chicken if ya can get it all the way.

“Their business plans aren’t to live on profit margins from groceries alone.”

I do not misunderstand that point.

But the regular supermarkets ARE depending on THEIR regular business, and their profit margins ARE very low, and Amazon COULD begin to cut into their businesses as well.

Do you notice how most processed chicken at the supermarket has a "diaper" underneath that is soaking wet and kind of gross? That is to catch the excess water that continues to drip out of the chicken after packaging.

Our local Smiths had Heritage brand chicken thighs - four pounds at 99c a pound. Got it home and found that "diaper" underneath sopping wet, which weighed almost a pound itself, so the total price was actually for three pounds of chicken - not that good a deal.

We raised Hell with Smiths, who refunded our money, but our gripe to them was also to find another vendor who didn't resort to what we considered a devious practice. Didn't think about the contamination angle, but it is worth of consideration. Unfortunately, non of their chickens are air-chilled.

Also noticed beef shrinks by almost half when cooked due to water injection, so that's gone off our shopping list.

Trader Joe’s has a lot of unique items and some very good prices on things like nuts and dried fruit. But it’s not exactly where you would want to shop for produce.

I agree that TJ’s is more of a specialty store than a full-line store. But then again, if you take away the new loss-leaders, Whole Foods is a luxury/specialty store, too.
