Texas lands a lot of west coast corporate relos I’m sure but I don’t see it as being quite the fit that they imagine. They’re running on past track record rather than looking at what the company relocating has stated they desire. If Norfolk-Va Beach-Hampton Roads hasn’t put together a good proposal their economic development team are flat-footed fools because they’ve got what they’re likely looking for. Several large operations already there with online, web and catalog distribution centers, so the infrastructure and at least a good start on trained workforce is already there.
I'd be surprised if the group you mentioned weren't already well into developing a proposal for the move - when I first heard about HQ2 last week I told my wife to text our nephew and "alert" him to it - he's been working on a project to develop a sort of glorified think tank we've been jokingly calling "Silicon Valley East" with some south Jersey resources including Stockton University, the FAA technical center and the AC International Airport - though a very, very long shot HQ2 would have made a nice addition to the lineup - turns out he and his group had been working on a proposal for weeks - whoever ends up getting the project will be getting a real prize.....
I remember reading one story that they were looking for a city with a downtown. So they may be looking high rise instead of campus.
San Antonio probably doesn’t have a shot. Compared to DFW and Houston (and even Austin) they can’t deliver air service. There’s a reason AT&T (actually several, but that was a big one) moved from San Antonio to Dallas.
Austin might be their best choice in Texas if they are willing to forego a hub airport. Houston has great air service but lousy public transit; Dallas has better transit, the old telecom corridor (and UTD, which was founded to serve the tech industry). But Toyota, State Farm and several others have run up housing prices significantly over the last 5 years.
I’m with you. Collin County is full of liberals thanks to companies like Toyota. Plus horrific traffic and home prices going through the roof. Gah!
Actually, a very likely possibility is just north of Fort Worth, TX, not far from Fort Worth Alliance Airport. There’s plenty of room to build a second Amazon corporate campus there, and it’s in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, so they have plenty of people to draw from for employees.
A dismaying thought just hit me. Baltimore. Wouldn’t that float the boat of a bunch of overgrown do-gooder SJW captains of the universe.
The best-paying salary job I ever had was in Alliance as an HR Rep. for a staffing agency within a Foxconn plant. And I only had to work Friday through Sunday.
“move a bunch of Leftists into Texas.”
Good point. The best thing about Texas is that the people generally are conservative. Moving Seattle people there would be bad. Thousands of bad apples to spoil the bunch; it never seems to work the other way around.
Considering the culture of CA, I can’t imagine any corporation moving TO CA. So many are leaving.
