Neither the first KKK of the Reconstruction era nor the second KKK of the 1920s was known for being kindly disposed towards Italians.

As the scion of Southern Unionist Republicans whose family was attacked by the original Klan, I nevertheless, in the interest of historical accuracy, object to the projecting of the second Klan onto the first one. The original was totally different, did not burn crosses, and had Jewish and Catholic members. It had nothing to do with the prejudices of the "revived" (imitation) Klan that has existed in one form or another since 1915.

Yes, the second Klan was much different from the first...just took the same name. In some ways it was more like the Know-Nothing movement of the 1850s.

I had a Unionist great-great-grandfather (born in Virginia but living in Missouri at the time of the war) who was targeted by pro-Confederate "bushwhackers" during the war (but survived)...but I never heard anything about him being targeted by the Klan and I doubt they were active in his area (since Missouri was not one of the states subjected to Reconstruction).

His brother was a Confederate but lived in a different part of Missouri.
