In a word, No.
There’s video of his car on what looks to be a mostly empty street. There was no mob paying any attention to him much less surrounding him. The crowd is a long way in front of him moving in the same direction that he is headed. He accelerates for a block or so before he plows into them.

He is driving in slow speed, somebody hits the side of his car with a baseball bat and he apparently panics and plows into the crowd in front of him.
Yeah that video is a killer for any claim that he was scared or surrounded or attacked.
He was on an almost empty street. I think he must have had two blocks clear ahead of him when he put his foot on the gas.

According to Wiki, Charlottesville has a population of 48,000.
This means it likely has about 50-75 cops (errrr....bodies with a badge and gun).
In a college town, it’s guaranteed that a large percentage on those cops are women, gays, trannies, overweight folks, 95lb women, whatever.....affirmative action at it’s peak!
It’s also guaranteed that their (the cops) boss is some wet pants liberal and his boss, McAuliffe, is, like his best friend Obama, a communist.
So, maybe the cops had half their troops that would/could FIGHT because make no mistake that is what this was...........one big FIGHT.

A "patriotic American" would say that even a Nazi has the right to free speech and assembly in the USA, and the right to protection if other forces try to stop them. Just because their speech happens to be unpalatable doesn't mean they lose their rights.

My guess is that a lot of the police officers don’t even live in the city.
Charlottesville is deeply blue. It is surrounded by Albemarle County, which is blue—but only recently.
The rest of Central Virginia is deep red.
