I hate coups. Freedom is never negotiated, it is always won in battle.

Sounds low.
The premise of this story is that a “coup” in Washington,D.C. would control the country and the new “leaders” would secure power quickly. Actually there would be a bitter, violent civil war that would not end anytime soon. Yet this story was created in a social or political vacuum. This country is divided, bitterly divided and its getting worse as the culture fragments.
So in Schlichter's alternate universe the Trump administration became what the coup organizers claimed it was to begin with. Not a very positive outcome.

This liberal wet dream probably didn’t take into account the millions of well armed citizens that will storm the area in a Banzai blitz that ISIS could only dream about.
Then there’s the silent true patriots in the services that will induce massive sabotage on aircraft and vehicles along with loads of “friendly fire” to the back of skulls.
This story is too clean for anything close to what reality would be.
Stupid. No coup could take power that way in this country. The military wing of the coup would be utterly unable to cope with the uprising by the people.

You are right. It is way low. The plotters won’t play around taking prisoners or preserving infrastructure. We won’t have much choice on our side but to neutralize a lot of people. There will also be a lot of mistakes, friendly fire, escalation, etc.

That very certainly would happen. After that, though, le deluge. 324 dead? We'd be lucky to keep it to 324,000.
There are countries far more invested in their capital cities - France, for example - such that capture of that city is essentially victory. The Germans were counting on that in 1914 and it worked in 1940. The United States isn't like that. Control of government facilities in Washington, DC, won't do the job. There is a separate government structure with its own military assets in every state. It's a very solid design; one might almost think it's what those old guys in tricorn hats had in mind in 1787.
Any such coup would touch off a conflagration that no coup-sympathetic media campaigns could possibly put out. In fact, historically such things have to run their own bloody course and burn out by themselves when there's no fuel left. Not a happy prospect.
