From what I’ve read in various articles, it seems like Ford had three big investments planned: in Michigan to build the Bronco/Ranger, Kentucky to build the Expedition and Mexico to build the Focus. So 2/3 were originally meant to be in the US.
In Jan, President Trump tweeted:
“Ford said last week that it will expand in Michigan and U.S. instead of building a BILLION dollar plant in Mexico. Thank you Ford & Fiat C!”

Did Ford execs lie to the President? If they said they were going to invest here INSTEAD OF Mexico, surely that means they told the President all 3 investments were coming to the US? Yet 1 is still going abroad, just to China not Mexico? Ford needs to be hit with a tariff for that.
Yeah. Good riddance.
Tariffs only gather tax on inbound goods and services.
Companies are always free to build outside of the US, and NO ONE is saying that should change.
As long as we have decent tariffs in place, we will see a net benefit to the country. It will also encourage production here, but lowering business taxes and regulations will likely be even better incentive.
I understand they will be exporting this model to the US.
We had better get a grip or we will lose the auto industry too. The hollowing out of the USA infrastructure continues at an alarming rate. There is not CONSERVATIVE about de industrialization....
It wouldn't be a tariff on China per say, it would be a tariff on Ford products made in China. To avoid that tariff, they (Ford/China) are FRee to sell that junk anywhere else on this planet (and beyond) to avoid the tariff. FUFORD! Get on it Mr. President. Although, there may be a good strategy involved to allow Ford Motor Co. to expend a few billion setting it all up first...just my sinister way of thinking. Keep in mind, during the Reign of "O" and the auto bailouts that FMC refused, Americans patriotically jumped behind FMC and shunned GMC, then to have FMC flip America the finger like this...yes, let them expend those billions first, then drop a 50% tariff on them. FUFORD!
So much for that American jobs promise.
Yup, yup, and double YUP!
Do these people think we can’t comprehend simple English?
Move production = shut down US production + start up/add to Chinese production.
I drive a Fusion. I was thinking of getting a F-150.
NOW I’ll get a Silverado.
It's pretty common these days.
Heck, Chevy builds a badass car in Russia that we'll never see. Шевроле Нива (Chevrolet NIVA).
I want one!
Exporting to the U.S. From a foreign plant after closing down a good plant in the U.S. is wrong.
Understandable if they plan to sell the Focus to the Chinese, I get that. But as for me, the Focus is no longer on my short list. In fact, I’m getting more fed up with Ford the more I think about it.
Look up “VW Bug crayon odor”; you’ll find the reason for the odor was poor quality control and materials in Mexico. China will be worse.
WHERE a car is made is very important.
This is why a tariff needs to be put in place. It requires no vigilance and works 7x24x365. Anything else and these CEOs will continue to de industrialize the USA completely.
The girl or the ugly Yugo replacement?
“Fake news” is everybody’s domain. Just saying stuff makes it so.
That would be unfortunate...Ford is moving future production of the Focus from Mexico to China while keeping its promise to retool the Michigan plant to make higher end vehicles.
These small cars weren't going to be made in the USA anyway after 2018 and Ford isn't closing the current US production line, so its a mystery why folks here are so incensed.
Pretty! The car also.
35% import duty immediately
35% import duty immediately
What not future production of the Focus from Mexico to AMERICA? HEH HEH Hmmmm?
