Interesting. ..my husband’s family ended up with a copy of a Magna Carta from the early 1700s...we think a relative was a Governor in one of early states and thought it important.
Magna Carta: The King relinquishes absolute power.
MAGA Carta: The King’s power is returned to the People.
DemoCrata: Absolute Power grab again.
British popular historian Michael Wood did an excellent series on Anglo-Saxon period back in late ‘70s early ‘80s. It’s available on YouTube. Very well done and you get the sense of what an orderly civilization it was governed by just and equal application of the law.
I highly recommend Churchill’s “Birth of Britain”, which I got on Kindle for free. It tells this story very well, and is something not taught here, but which informs the background of American history and American culture. For example, the description of the areas conquered by the Danes and how the Danes considered themselves free men not beholden to anyone presaged the attitudes of Americans. We may in fact be more Danish in outlook than Saxon. I think the Pilgrims came from that part of England.
Having read “The Cousins Wars” many years ago, the two books fit well together.
I understand, my wife and I watched nearly the entire series before we seriously began wondering JUST how close to reality it was!
Thank you for those recommendations, I will definitely follow up on them!
Neither my wife nor I are particularly well versed in events prior to the 16th century, so this whets my appetite to become more factually informed!
Nice overview but doesn’t really go into the relationship of the Constitution to Alfred’s Book of Laws.
I think he was a real person and since not much is written about him, Bernard Cornwell has the license to make up more than a bit.
Alfred and his wives and whatnot are not too far from what is known from what I can tell.

Uh, no. We're lucky if modern publik skools even have them read the US Constitution.
