My understanding is that Scalise had security because of his position.
Otherwise, there would have been no security, which may have been what the shooter was counting on.
He may have read that Congress members are not assigned security guards, but didn’t realize that some are.

Or it could’ve been as simple as ensuring that more than 2 Capitol Police officers were assigned, and assigned not just to Scalise but to secure the venue. This isn’t rocket science.

Now that I’m thinking about it, why didn’t the Alexandria PD have personnel there? Was the PD aware of the practice? If not, why not? If so, were they asked for any personnel? If not, why? If so, why weren’t APD personnel provided?

Exactly. Nothing will ever be 100% secure or safe. But, someone there had a gun. Lives were saved. We can learn from this.

The security detail for scalise is assigned based on rank, but they didn't act as much "prsonal security" as venue security.
I take your point though. Somebody is going to have to think through wehre and how to secure congresspeople, and how much of that is on the taxpayer.
Senator King spoke at my son's graduation. He had one uniformed officer on had for security. The venue had maybe 10 others, typical for a crowd event.
