This gobshitte and his band in my opinion are much over rated and to listen to this moral idiot lecturing Americans is beyond infuriating.

Interestingly he’s silent on the murders and otherwise ethnic cleansing of the Coptic Christians in Egypt.

Contrast this with the Rush Snakes and Arrows tour, which featured a backdrop of slow motion US soldier treading through a sandstorm with angel’s wings on their backs...

... which drew a loud, sustained cheer from the audience.

I have an interesting history with this band. Saw them in Boston when they were still nobodies. December of 1980, just a few days after John Lennon was killed. Might have been their first U.S. show. I didn't go to see them on purpose, they just happened to be the band playing at the Paradise that night, a small rock club that featured a lot of up and coming bands (and many that never made it at all). My friends and I would go there on weekends to see some bands and drink lots of beer. Those were my partying days so I don't remember too much about the performance and definitely didn't get the impression they were going to soon be big rock stars.

In 1983 I saw them again at the US Festival in California. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton at the time with the Marines and if I remember, it was Memorial Day weekend. This time they impressed the hell out of me. I became an instant fan. I remember Bono taking this flag and just climbing the rafters with it and then singing from the roof of the stage.

Saw them again four years later when they were on top of the world with Joshua Tree album. I had just gotten married and my wife and I went to see them during our honeymoon. That show (and album) bring back nice memories.

Then Bono started getting preachy and full of himself.

Saw them one more time during the "Achtung Baby" tour but lost interest in them after that. That was a great album by the way, probably their last great album. But by then, they were only playing stadiums and it was more of a hassle getting to and out of the show than it was worth. Our seats that night were so far away from the stage that they looked like little ants. I think we sat in the stadium parking lot for five hours after that last show before we were able to even start moving our car.

Their last few albums have been underwhelming with a couple good songs here and there.

Overall the music of U2 is not bad, especially the 1980s and early 1990s era. Just wish Bono wasn't such a self-absorbed douchebag. I think the other band members are good people.

Thank you for that post. What I would have done to see a US Festival show...saw the Joshua Tree Tour and they were indeed good. Seeing Bono on Jimmy Kimmel saying he understands Trump voters (we were angry) was kind of demeaning in a way. I didn’t vote for Trump because I was angry...there were many many reasons. Anyway, to me, showing those images was an insult to the memories of those who were killed in Manchester...and to the many attacks all over Europe. Glad you got to see some great shows back in the day.

I think they named themselves after the US spy plane which is much better known.

The band could also have been named for a German submarine.
