“False headline. Fordham is a private, independent research university, not governed by the Archdiocese of New York or the Society of Jesus for almost 50 years. Though they still have some Jesuit, um, residue, they have been governed by an independent lay board since 1969.”

From the Fordham University website:

We’re a Jesuit, Catholic university. Our spirit comes from the nearly 500-year history of the Jesuits. It’s the spirit of full-hearted engagement—with profound ideas, with communities around the world, with injustice, with beauty, with the entirety of the human experience.

“I’m sure this would have pained BCM, who was a graduate of Fordham Law.”

Who is BCM?

Their website clearly deals in misleading, soothing palaver for the sake of reassuring their donor base. The fact is they declared their autonomy from both the Jesuits and the Archdiocese in 1969, and reconstituted themselves as an independent, separately-incorporated entity under a lay board of directors.

Read it and weep (LINK).

From the Wikipedia link

“In 1969, the board of trustees was reorganized to include a majority of nonclerical members, which officially made the university an independent institution”

I did not doubt your statement about 1969. I wondered how Fordham can still claim to be Catholic. It almost seems like false representation.

They were all signatories of the 1967 "Land 'o' Lakes Declaration" and declared their autonomy from the Church in the late 1960's. They are separately incorporated and have lay boards of directors.

For instance, back when Obama was chosen to receive his honorary degree from Notre Dame, a bunch of us FReepers drove ourselves crazy trying to dig out who held the real reins of power at ND. They have a convoluted relationship with the Holy Cross Fathers, but neither the Order nor the Archdiocese controls them, neither financially, canonically, nor legally according to their own constitution and by-laws.

They have a Board of Trustees and a Board of Directors and all manner of overlapping bureaucracies. What it comes down to, is an entrenched Old Boys' Network accountable to nobody.

It's really getting sick out there in LGBTQ Land.

Sicker, actually.

Governance by a lay board doesn’t necessarily mean that it has ceased being a juridic person (or at least property of a juridic person) under the authority of the Archdiocese. To be truly independent, the Jesuits would have had to alienate it first (with the proper permission of the Archdiocese and the Holy See).

That said, I’m not surprised at the headline given that most if not all of the historic American Jesuit universities have merely a worn-out Catholic veneer.

With rising societal and collegial insanity, coupled with outrageous tuition fees, there should be a market for ONLINE conservative Christian colleges these days. I know I would never fork over hard earned money, or go into debt, to attend these insane asylums.

As far as I know, there are no governing legal links now between Catholic colleges/ universities and the dioceses in which they are located or their founding religious orders. If there are any exceptions, they are vanishingly few.

All a bishop can do to a seriously wayward institution, is to rebuke it in public, and to have it delisted from the annual Kenedy Directory. See Manhattanville. That’s about it.
