Vigilantes are almost always peaceful, following all the rules to petition the government to change its ways. And when these petitions, and voting, are ignored and disdained by government, the vigilantes create legal means of self protection and defense against the criminals.
Typically, at this point, the bad government imagines the vigilantes to be a bigger threat to their power than are the criminals, so seeks to outlaw the vigilantes, or even to use violence against them, by the police, even in cooperation with the criminals.
This is about the final straw for the vigilantes, who still try to carry out the expulsion of criminals through less violent means. But if this is interfered with, the vigilantes finally resort to violence against the criminals, and maybe the police and the bad government.
By the time a superior government authority arrives to restore order, both the criminals and corrupt government are long gone, and peace and normality are already restored, along with an ongoing cleanup of any damages.
The superior government is assured that the situation is under control, the election of a new government will happen soon, and there is no possibility of a restoration of the previous government.
They will ignore it. When faced with something that does not fit their agenda , or facts they can not refute, they ignore both and continue on.
Many years ago when I a young man, my uncle (by marriage) told me this story… 1910 rural Tennessee. A young woman ran off and married a boy, who was not approved of by her family. But they was married and in 1910 Tennessee, marriage was sacred. Soon after the marriage, the husband (a no’count, bad to drink… per the terms of the time), began to abuse his young wife. Her father and brothers visited the couple’s home one night, beat the HAIL outta the husband and informed him his young wife would soon be a widow if the abuses continued... then instructed her to nurse her husband’s injuries.
To him her father ordered: “We expect you in church every Sunday with your wife”! His family complained to the local sheriff of the assault… but the sheriff responded: “Tis a family matter not under my authority”. The man did straighten up and he and his wife had a dozen young’uns and were married for over 50 years till his death in 1961. My uncle said the story was true, as the young woman was his sister. Such were the days of family “justice”!
It is a shame how the British legal system has developed to help criminals. Australia’s legal system is an extreme example of how a persons freedoms and rights have been destroyed.

The judge reasoned that, as a Muslim who had immigrated from Afghanistan, “seeing girls in bikinis is different to the environment in which he grew up.”
Seriously? This young man assaults 9 different women and girls on a beach in Australia, and the court finds him not guilty because he came from a different culture?

This is an example of why I’m thoroughly convinced that eventually vigilante justice in western countries is going to become widespread. The criminal justice systems are politically incapable of protecting the public from the ravages of 21st century savages.
It seems that citizens should organize against this unequal treatment under the law.
