I think they mean 3x his original fare on Delta. Last minute fares are expensive on almost airlines. I usually fly Delta for my business travel, but recently had to book a same day flight from ATL to SLC - Ended up on Southwest for $900, rather than over $2000 for Delta. Hub to hub for Delta is prohibitively expensive last minute.
