For many blacks, college is their first interaction with any meaningful number of non-blacks - and they see very quickly how poorly they stack up. My freshman year in college had a lot more blacks than my sophomore year, and so on until graduation; when they don’t have black teachers fabricating grades from thin air, it is obvious they often are ill-equipped for college coursework. In fact, there was one building for “remedial classes”, where affirmative action students took high school-level classes without which whites wouldn’t even be admitted. Some dropped out after a couple of semesters there; they were wasting time and money in classes in which they weren’t doing well and were receiving no college credits.
