Ask the American Indians about brutal. Ask the people that survived Sherman's march to the sea, or maybe you could find a Bataan survivor. Brutal is the normal mode for humans.
Sadly you are correct. But some times brutality is the only way to deal with certain types of humans.

The rest of the "Mediterranean" and "Aegean" search hits, chrono.
Thanks for posting this terrible reality.
American sailors didn’t just standby. They rescued over 250,000 people fleeing the terrible slaughter
USS_Litchfield_(DD-336)
Litchfield, a flush-decker, destroyer sailed to Bremerton, Washington, on her shakedown cruise but her initial tour on the west coast was brief. Before the end of 1921 she had departed San Diego, California and arrived in Charleston, South Carolina.
Following the annual fleet maneuvers, Litchfield steamed to Newport, Rhode Island, to join Division 39 for duty in the eastern Mediterranean, arriving Constantinople 28 June 1922.
The division served under the direct command of Rear Admiral Mark L. Bristol, U.S. High Commissioner for Turkey. The Allied Commissioners were attempting to end a war between this former ally of Germany and Greece.
Litchfield served in humanitarian causes and as an instrument of American foreign policy as Admiral Bristols destroyers evacuated 262,000 Greek and Armenian refugees from Smyrna, Turkey, 13 September, 1922.
The destroyers also assisted civilian relief agencies attempting to feed and evacuate additional thousands suffering from famine and war.
A suggestion: You might consider posting this post every 13 September as an example of man’s cruelity to others. to remind of how cruel s
Uzay was a Twitter friend of mine for several years. I liked her work, she knows the history of the Region. She grew up in Turkey.
She is no longer on Twitter, I’ve not had contact with her since she left Twitter. It is clear the her account, under her real name, was taken over by a Turkish front, all posts were hidden. I’m very confident she was threatened. About that time, I was approached by 2 accounts in the US that said they were Kurds, but I am now confident they were Turks. They wanted to meet with me here in the US. That did not happen.
Turkey follows all who write critical things about them. Anywhere in the world. They serve Great Evil. Never underestimate the lengths they will go to.
Uzay still writes for a number of publications, it may be that she is now in Israel, but I base that on nothing but a hunch.
Thanks for the feedback and be very careful!
Written by my late aunt about my grandmother's family in Smyrna. Not a well known book, more of a vanity project.
My grandmother herself was long gone to America when the genocide occurred, in an arranged marriage with my grandfather who was from Lesbos, making me one half Lesbian. :O)
1/2? smile. hee hee hee
Smyrna? Such a great tragedy.
It is very hard to see how this has been papered over for so very long. It is clear that Turk forces burned the city and massacred many Greeks and Armenians.
But the Turk Government blamed it upon Armenians who burned their own city. Nobody really believes that, but there were defenders of Turkey then who told that lie widely. Even today Turkey denies any part in it.
Turkey will never admit it. If they did they would not be able to do it again. Which they will do, given the opportunity.
Erdoo the Islamist dictator of Turkey walks that path again today. He must be stopped.
