I think your conclusion is too optimistic by half. Many Dem supporters are rather psycho about their beliefs, even those who might seem functional in daily life. I'm thinking of some in-laws and nieces.
I have a friend who is a psychiatrist, and I asked him what the over-under was on mental health. Of course, it's a spectrum that ranges from the incapacitated mentally ill through the merely neurotically disturbed. He said that there were all sorts of answers, ranging from 1 in 10 to a much, much higher number. I'm thinking--judging from the frequency of adversarial politics through history--that sanity is a 50-50 proposition at best.

Such arguments sound like Hitler saying the Poles attacked him—so he had to invade. If its not OK for people to hit protesting Americans it should be just as wrong to hit Trump supporters—legalize the attack by saying they are Nazis or KKK extremists etc... Its OK if Obama does something, and wrong if Trump does it. This may not end well. CW II may well be right around the corner.
