Brennan went to Catholic grade school, high school, and college. He grew up in Northern NJ, and his parents were immigrants from Ireland.

None of the above means anything about what his current religious beliefs are. He sounds like a typical Jesuit educated leftist, who often mixes up religion and politics. (Pope Francis is another fine example.)

It isn’t surprising that someone who sees the ultimate aim of religion and politics as the same would be attracted to Communism or Islam.

His studies included a junior year abroad learning Arabic and taking Middle Eastern studies courses at the American University in Cairo.<-—

At UT at Austin, he received a Master of Arts in government with a concentration in Middle Eastern studies in 1980. He speaks Arabic fluently.

The story is that he was attending Fordham in NY and saw an advertisement to work for the CIA. His travels after that were part of the training supposedly.

I am sure there are a lot of missing links in that story. I have heard that the FBI recruits at Fordham. I was under the impression that the CIA recruited at more of the top tier schools—but don’t profess to be that knowledgeable about the subject.

Yes, but I just did some more research. John Brennan also attended and graduated from Catholic grade school and Catholic high school, which makes there being NO MENTION since his college years of any affiliation with Catholicism even stranger. My sister and brother-in-law live in the D.C. area and work in the intelligence community and Catholics are well aware of senior people in all area of government, law, and journalism in Washington, DC, who even attend Mass once in a while, never mind are active parishioners. People who climb high in government tend not to be casual about anything; they are by nature disciplined achievers in all areas of their lives, which is why Catholic parishes down in DC are often led (on the laymen side) by recognizable names. If John Brennan and his wife were churchgoers, it almost certainly would be noted SOMEWHERE on the internet — even if just on a blog — especially in light of the persistent rumors that John Brennan converted to Islam years ago, while stationed in the Middle East. Yet, I can find nothing to indicate that Brennan identifies himself as Catholic. I don't claim that “proves” Brennan is not Catholic, but I do assert it makes it more likely than not that he hasn't been even a Christmas-and-Easter Catholic for decades.
