This is classic Trump positioning. I don't think he literally means increasing the number of warheads we have but a message to Putin that while he welcomes friendly relations, he will kick butt too if it came to that. And to the Chicoms that it isn't open season in the South China Sea anymore.
We’ve been letting our aging nukes collect dust and the rest of the world is in develop/build mode. Folks will rail against Trump but he’s absolutely right if we are to maintain an effective deterrent.
Why is Trump saying we should match the Russians warhead for warhead so bad on any level? The Russians only understand power and even the subtle difference in total warhead levels matters to them, even if it doesn’t to us.
Bragging rights. Just like someone who can run a mile in 3 min 57 sec is a ‘faster’ runner than someone doing it in 3 min 57.8 sec. Even with one warhead more than ours they will claim they have a more powerful military and Trump is not going to let that happen. They lost the cold war trying to keep up with Reagan.
