General Mattis said that Powerpoint makes one stupid.

He should tell that to the rest of the General Officer corps and the field grades who absolutely are obsessed with it.

General Mattis said that Powerpoint makes one stupid.

On he contrary

Reverse the traditional PowerPoint presentation

That is the FIRST slide presents the final solution

The rest of the 100 or so PP slides is sections of the supporting analysis...tabbed and linked from the first page.

As the Queen in Alice in Wonderland said:

Solution first...Analysis second.

I don't think you understand Powerpoint in the military.

Have you ever spent literally hours on 1 slide because your boss wants to make meaningless nit picky change after change after change?

Combat patrol briefings in Afghanistan and Iraq are now done on Powerpoint.

A squad of Soldiers can't go to the latrine without a Powerpoint briefing.

Well, that's a bit of hyperbole, but not by far.

Powerpoint absolutely strangles military operations in garrison and in theater.

I’m sure he will address it.

ITA! I am surprised that he doesn’t have Sun Tzu’s The Art of War on the list.

PP seems to be a textbook synopsis in the hands of one who KNOWS. It’s a tool. The issue is who is the teacher?

“The disaster of Dieppe, The Fiasco of Market Garden...”

I imagine that one can learn as much, if not more, from other’s mistakes as well as successes.

Think what a boon Powerpoint would have been to Old Abe, had it been available on 19 November 1863:

Patton was disgraced and punished for slapping a soldier he thought was trying to get out of his duties. A small mistake which really hurt nobody.

Montgomery’s arrogant errors cost the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of men. Patton said Market Garden would fail but Normandy plan to take Caen immediately also bogged down and last but not least by far, Montgomery didn’t have the nerve or the knowledge to finish Rommel after El Alamein. Surely, one of the greatest escapades in history was Rommel’s preservation of his troops and his escape from Montgomery of Alamein. Monty was never blamed for Dieppe and it was he who made the plans which were followed strictly and the Canadians were massacred. Sorry, but I call Monty’s “mistakes” as what they are, DISASTERS. I get tired of hearing him called “Great.” Then the arrogant SOB tried to take credit for our success at the Battle of the Bulge. Montgomery wouldn’t move one inch without having overwhelming numbers of men to advantage. He was afraid of his shadow.
Perhaps one can learn from disasters, but the ones responsible should be held accountable, not worshiped.

I don’t know much about that, but do recall that Monty came across to me as snooty and more of a glory hound than a good General. I imagine that General Mattis shares in your disgust of him - knowing more about him.

I remember my old man (Pacific Navy) talking about how they all had wished Patton could have just kept on rolling and taken out the commies. (Easier said than done, but....)

I agree with your old man. Stalin had hoodwinked the west however, with the exception of Cgurchill.
