Is there any mention in the article of the period of service if you were drafted? My ancestors in Russia left because they, as Volga Germans, had been told by Russia they would not be drafted, as part of the original incentive to move there, but the government reneged on that. The period of service was 20 years. Essentially, with the short life spans there, you were going to be in the Army for the rest of your miserable life. That makes escaping to America look like a much better option.
