The WWII soviet assignments was partly due to shortages.
They took, as you know huge losses in 1st two years.
I read that by 44’, they were beginning to feeling the strain. But they were winning by mid 44, and soviet troop quality (leaders, mostly) had improved dramatically.

The soviet trooper, was a hardy fighter, poorly led (early).

Your dad was a real hero.

I think women should read about the Army infantry in the Hurtgen Forest where several divisions had over 200 percent casualties.
