Over time, the assholery at the core of the DC culture has metastasized into various categories. Two come readily to mind:
The Bush Buffoons, for whom DC was a mere hiring hall where they awaited a call; alerting them that it was their turn to run.
Another is a schmuck like Gates, your eternal political flunky, who accomplished absolutely nothing during his tenure in office; yet remains a useful idiot for the frenzied left.

Bob Gates just manifested he is not competent to hold any office in the USA. His prior political appointments were obviously corrupt.

Gates was an Eagle Scout as a youth and much later in life served as the volunteer president of the National Eagle Scout Association. BSA paid him zip. The die had already been cast by the ~27 officers of the BSA National Executive Committee back in 2013 - mostly executives of Fortune 500 companies. Gates just provided the final gravitas, while serving as the volunteer BSA National President, for the vote at the 2015 BSA National Council meeting to permit adult homosexual membership within BSA units.
He really is a little man who has helped severely damage his country.
