- He's not a "devout Catholic". I can say I'm a picked pear, but that doesn't make it true.
- He should be attending Mass. For him not to do so would be committing yet another sin. Not sure what "church functions" you mean, but it's fine that he attends them, too.
- He should not, in his current state of life, be receiving Communion. Ever. At all.
- It's wrong for his paramour to attend any sort of "function ... with him as his companion," because it gives scandal.
